Some terms defined

To better understand Harvest Results tables we have defined the most commonly used terms below.

Control Average: The average yield (in tonnes per hectare) of a range of established varieties which have been selected as control varieties (C). Yields for individual varieties in each trial are expressed as a percentage of this control mean.

LSD 5% (%C): Least Significant Difference. Varieties that are more than one LSD apart are significantly different at the 5% confidence level. For example, if the LSD value is 2, a variety with a yield of 100 will be significantly lower than a variety with a yield greater than 102 and significantly greater than a variety with a yield of 98.

2013-18 average: This value is the average performance of each variety over a range of seasons. 

2018 mean: This yield value is the average performance of each variety in 2018 only.

The yields from each trial site show the variety performance from one site in 2018. Information on sowing date, previous crop and soil type are provided for winter wheat. 

Important note

Results from individual trial sites should not be used to make conclusions on variety performance.

The Recommended Lists are based on information taken from trials across the UK over several seasons. As more information becomes available from the 2018 harvest, this will contribute to the over-trials averages – which comprise four years for oilseeds and five years for cereals. These averages provide better information for comparison between varieties. When more results are available, validation procedures will examine cross-site differences further.
