Rotherham - Simon Hinchliffe

The Hinchliffe family farms milling and feed wheat, oilseed rape and potatoes on 1,700 acres at multiple sites around Rotherham in South Yorkshire. Most of the land, predominantly medium and heavy loam soils, is owned, and the Hinchliffes farm the remainder under a range of tenures. The business employs two full time general farm workers and casual staff for potato work. Simon is supported on the farm by his wife Charlotte and his father.

Simon Hinchliffe - Timing is everything

A brief dry spell last week has allowed us to establish one of our final pieces of winter wheat. Following potatoes, the field will host an AHDB Cereals & Oilseeds variety trial looking at the local performance of JB Diego, Gallant and the hybrid Hyteck, which should prove interesting…and hopefully worth the hassle of cleaning out the Vaderstad hopper three times!

Crops of both oilseed rape and wheat have both established and developed well across the farm. A visit from agronomist Philip Wright in September gave us a good steer on cultivation type, depth and set up to resolve some of the remedial issues we faced with our soils following last season’s deluges. Philip’s involvement is part of our work to maximise fuel efficiency on the farm, which also benefits from input from the farmers of the Marr Arable Business Group.
